Igneous

Types of igneous rocks depends on how lava cools down.

Different igneous rocks have different minerals and colours.

Basalt:-

  • Formed by rapid cooling of lava.
  • It is dense and dark in colour and has fine grains.
  • Edges of this rock are very sharp.

Granite:-

  • Formed when magma cools below the earth's surface.
  • Very hard, used for flooring of houses making statues and paying roads.
  • It is black, grey, white or pink in colour.

Pumice:-

  • Formed by the cooling of lava.
  • It is grey, light, cream-coloured rock.
  • Can float.
  • Has many holes made by air trapped inside it . at the time of its formation.
  • Scrubbing stone to remove rough dead skin from the body.
  • Dentists use powdered pumice for polishing our teeth.

Types of Sedimentary Rocks:-

Sand Stone
  1. Formed when small particles of sand get compressed and cemented together.
  2. Consists mostly of a mineral called Quartz.
  3. Sand stone is widely used for making buildings.
  4. Building in Delhi , Agra & Rajasthan are made of sand stone.

Conglomerate
  • Solid mass of pebbles, sand and gravel cemented together with minerals.
  • Mostly orange or grey in color.

Shale
  • Smooth sedimentary rock formed when layer of clay harden.
  • Used to make tiles and bricks.

Metamorphic means - has changed.

Types of Metamorphic Rock

Marble:-
  • Limestone changes to marble.
  • Found in various colours.
  • Can be carved and polished easily.
  • Used in making statues and buildings.
  • Eg: Tajmahal

Slate:-
  • Shale changes to slate.
  • It is dark grey in colour.
  • Writing slates, black boards and roof tiles.

Gneiss:-
  • Granite changes into gneiss.
  • Light and dark bands of different colours that can be seen separately.

Quartzite:-
  • Sandstone changes to quartzite.
  • Used to make statues.

Minerals:-
  • They are underground natural resources.
  • Simple substance, complex one.
  • Gypsum and mica - non metallic minerals.
  • Gold, silver and copper - metallic minerals.

Uses of rocks and minerals:-

  • Different metals are extracted or mined from minerals.
  • A mineral from which metal can be extracted is called an ore.
  • Iron, aluminium, copper and zinc from haematite, bauxite, copper pyrites and calamine respectively.
  • Used to make utensils, machines, furniture, wires ...etc
  • Precious metals like gold and silver are used for making jewellery.

Fuels from Rocks and Minerals

Coal, Petrol, Diesel, Kerosene, LPG, CNG etc are fuels used daily.

Coal:-
  • Valuable natural resource.
  • Is sedimentary rock formed from the remains of plants buried millions of years ago.
  • Due to high temperature and pressure inside the earth, these remains of plants turned into coal.
  • Used for cooking, producing electricity making plastic, nylon and fertilizers.

Petroleum:-
  • Dark coloured, thick crude oil black gold.
  • Petroleum was formed when small plants and animals got buried under sea millions of years ago.
  • High pressure and temperature, their dead bodies were converted slowly into petroleum.
  • LPG, CNG, Petrol, diesel and kerosene from petroleum.
  • Used for producing tremendous amount of energy.
  • This energy is called nuclear energy.
  • Atomic power plants use uranium to produce nuclear energy.

  • Minerals are very hard and found in the form of crystals.
  • Cut and polished into beautiful stones called gemstones.
  • Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires are some gemstones used in making jewellery.
Soil:-
  • Soil is the upper most layer of the earth.
  • Plants grow in soil. Plants produce food and help to maintain oxygen level in the air.
  • Soil is the layer of sand, organic matter and minerals on the surface of the earth with some amount of water and air.
  • i.e Soil = sand + organic matter + minerals + water + air.
Formation of Soil
Composition of soil:-
  • Soil is made up of gravel + sand + clay + moisture(water)+ Humus.
  • Soil also contains air + Minerals + bacteria and fungi.
Soil Profile:-
  • Layers of soil is called soil profile.
  • Three layers.
  • Upper most layer of the soil is called top soil.
  • Middle of the soil is called sub soil.
  • Lower most layer of the soil is called bed rock.
Top Soil:-
  • Upper most layer.
  • All agricultural activities are done in this layer.
  • Contains tiny particles of sand + clay + humus + moisture(water) and air.
  • Humus makes soil fertile.
  • Plants get essential nutrients from this layers.

Sub Soil:-
  • Has little humus but contains water.
  • Roots reach this layer.
  • Large bits of rock are present here.

Bed Rock:-
  • Large pieces of rocks and is called bedrock.
  • It is deep in side the earth.
