Definition
"When we divide a shape or figure into two parts of equal shape and size, we call the shape or figure symmetrical".
The phenomenon is called as "symmetry".
Example:

In the above figure, all the shapes given are symmetrical.
In each of the figure, a line is dividing the figure into two equal halves.
The line which divides a shape or figure into two identical halves is called the "Line of Symmetry".
The shapes can have vertical axes of symmetry, horizontal axes of symmetry or both.
Examples:

Symmetry can also be seen in plane shapes.
A plane shape is said to be symmetrical about a line, if the line divides the shape into two equal halves.
Some shapes have one line of symmetry, while some have two or even more lines.
There are also some shapes which are not symmetrical at all.
Let us observe the line of symmetry in shapes.
- ONE LINE OF SYMMETRY
- TWO LINES OF SYMMETRY
- THREE LINES OF SYMMETRY
- FOUR LINES OF SYMMETRY
- FIVE LINES OF SYMMETRY
- NO LINE OF SYMMETRY

"A collection of plane or simple figures that fills the plane to form a pattern without leaving any space or overlaps in between".
Examples:

We can see that the shapes fit together to form a pattern.
This is called "Tessellation".
"The image of an object or a shape corresponding in appearance is known as reflection".
Reflection from a mirror throws back or gives back the image shown.
Reflecting an object produces its mirror image.
Examples:

SLIDE
"A slide takes place when a shape moves in one direction from one place to another".

FLIP
"A flip takes place when a shape is flipped across a line and faces the opposite direction".

TURN
"A turn takes place when a shape is turned through an angle".

Definition
"The series or a sequence of repeated objects, sounds, or numbers is known as patterns".
- A pattern can have repeated decorative designs.
- They can be regular form or order in which a series of things occurs.
- Patterns can be found in nature and in numbers.
It is a beautiful observation to see patterns in nature.
- Cut a kiwi fruit and see the patterns formed
- Look at a peacock and see the patterns.
- Look at a sunflower and see the patterns formed beautifully.
Numbers also reflect beautiful patterns.

Let us have a look at some more patterns
