Definition

"Per means one and cent is hundred. So, per cent is "out of one hundred".
Per Cent is also a form of fraction.
The symbol of 'Per Cent' is '%'.
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
10 out of 100 is 10/100
Look at the figure below. 10/100 or 10%.
Similarly, 20/100 = 20% ; 25/100 = 25% ; 30/100 = 30%; 35/100 = 35%.
To find percent, we can build equivalent fractions with the denominator 100.

Converting A Fraction Into Percent %

A fraction can be converted into percent by the following two methods.

1) Change a fraction into an equivalent fraction with the denominator 100.
2) Multiply the fraction by 100 and add the '%' sign.

Examples:
1. Represent 9/8 as per cent.
Solution: Percentage can be found by multiplying by 100.
9/82 × 10025

Answer = 25 × 9/2 = 225/2 = 112 1/2.
2. Represent 1/2 as a percent.
Solution:
1/21 × 10050

3. Convert 4.9 into percent.
Solution:
4.90 × 100 = 49.0%

4. Convert 2 1/4 into percent.
Solution: To convert a mixed fraction into percent, change it to an improper fraction and multiply by 100.

5. Convert 8 into percent.
Solution:

8 × 100 = 800%

Converting Percent Into A Fraction

To convert percent into a fraction, take the percent and divide by 100.
Examples:
1. Convert 25% into a fraction.
Solution:
25% = 25/100
=1/4

2. Convert 6 1/4 % into a fraction.
Solution:
6 1/4% = 25/4%
= (25/4)/100
= 255/4 × 1/1004 = 1/16

Convert Percent Into A Decimal Number

To convert a percent into a decimal number, we divide the percent by 100 and write it in decimal form.
Examples:
1. Convert 9% into decimal
Solution:
9% = 9/100
= 9/100
= 0.09

2. Convert 635 % into decimal.
Solution:
635 % = 635/100
= 6.35

Finding Percent Of A Number

The simplest way to find the percent of a number is to know the fraction equivalent to the percent.
Examples:
a. 50 % means half or 1/2 times. b. 25 % means quarter or 1/4 times c. 10 % means one-tenth or 1/10 times d. 200 % means double or 2 times
e. 300 % means triple or 3 times

Examples:

1. How much is 40 % of a metre?
Solution: We know that, 1 metre = 100cm.
So, 40 % of a metre = 40/100 of 100 cm
= 40/100 × 100 = 40 cm.

2. How much is 70 % of a kilogram.
Solution:We know that, 1 kg = 1000g
So, 70 % of a kilogram = 70/100 of 1000 g
= 70/100 × 1000 = 700 g.

3. How much is 45 % of ₨ 1?
Solution:₨ 1 = 100 p
45 % of ₨ 1 = 45/100 of 100p
= 45/100 × 100 = 45 p.

4. 30 % of 60 books are sold. How many books are sold?
Solution:
30 % of 60 = 30/100 of 60.
= 30/100 × 60 = 18.
18 books are sold.

What Percent Is One Number Of Another

Example: Raj spent ₨ 40 out of ₨ 100 on his meals. How much percent of his money did he spend on his meals?
Solution: If we write the above problem as a fraction, we get:
40/100
40/100 × 100
= 40 % after changing it into percent
So, Raj spent 40 % of his money on meals.
