" Time is the on going sequence of events taking place ".

  • While counting time, it should be remembered that, the "longer hand" is use to count minutes and the "shorter hand" is use to count hours.
Telling The Time By The Clock
time9
  • The clock has numbers 1 to 12 marked on it.
  • It also has 2 hands, one is long and the other is short.
  • The short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand.
  • The both hands together tell us the time.

Hour hand is at 1, and minutes hand is at 12. So, it is 1 o' Clock.

time10

Hours hand is at 6, and minutes hand is at 12. So, it is 6 o' Clock.

time11

Reading And Writing Time

We will notice the way hour is written. 8 o'clock is the same as 8 : 00.

The two dots written are very important to separate hours and minutes.

The same way we write,
5 o'clock as 5 : 00
9 o' clock as 9 : 00.

What Time is it ?

Half past the hour

When the minute hand (the longer hand) is halfway around the clock at 6, then the time is half past the hour, which the hour hand shows.

It means 30 minutes past the hour.

The time shown is half past 4 o'clock or half past 4.

This is also written as 4 : 30.

Time

A quarter past the hour

When the minute hand is a quarter of the way around the clock at 3, then the time is quarter past the hour.

"Quarter"in time standard is 15 minutes.

The time shown is quarter past 5 o'clock or quarter past five.

This means 15 minutes past 5 o'clock.

It is also written as 5 : 15.

Time

A quarter to the hour

When the minute hand is on 9, then the time is a "quarter to the next hour".

The time shown is a quarter to 7 o'clock.

This means fifteen minutes left to 7 o'clock.

It is written as 6 : 45.

Between each number on the clock there are five minutes.

From 12 to 9 there are 45 minutes.

Time
A.M and P.M

We know that there are 24 hours in a day.

The hour hand takes 2 rounds on the clock in 1 day.

  • When it is 12 o'clock in the night, it is called ' midnight '.
  • Time
  • After midnight till 12 noon the next day, we write time with a.m.
If we wake up late at night and look at the clock to find the hands at 3 : 00, it is 3 : 00 a.m.
  • Time
  • When it is 12 o'clock during the day, it is ' noon ' time.
  • Time
  • After noon, till midnight we write time with p.m.
    Example: 2 : 30 pm, 7 : 00 pm etc.
  • Time
Days of the week

Time
Months Of the Year
  • There are twelve months in a year.
  • All the months does not have same number of days.
  • Some have 30 and some have 31 days.
  • February has 28 days, but in a leap year February has 29 days.
  • A leap year comes after a gap of 4 years.
Time

After December, the year ends with the beginning of a new year with January.

Looking At Calendar
  • A calendar contains all the twelve months in a year.
  • It shows us all the dates of each month.
  • It also shows which day falls on which day of the week.
  • Important festivals are marked in each month.

Let us look at the calendar and study it carefully.

  • Some calendars have only one month on one page.
  • Time
  • Some calendars have 3 months on one page.
  • Time
  • Some calendars have 12 months on one page.
