Q) Explain any 5 important points in time?
A)   Show/hide Answer

  • You know that a clock has two hands, a long hand and a short hand.
  • The long one is called the minute hand and the short one is called the hour hand.
  • In 1 hour, the hour hand moves from one number to the next.
  • That is, it moves from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and so on.
  • But in 1 hour, the minute hand goes around the face of the clock, that is it starts from 12, and comes back to 12 again.
  • In other words, in 1 hour, the minute hand completes one complete circle around the face of the clock.
  • The minute hand takes 5 minutes to move from a number on the face of the clock to the next number.
  • It means it takes 5 minutes for the minute hand to move from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and so on.
  • clock_hands
  • Clearly, the minute hand takes (5×12), 60 minutes to complete one round of the face of the clock.
  • The numbers are written on the outer edge of the face of the clock that helps you read the time in minutes easily.
  • The hour hand has crossed 1. The minute hand is on 8.
  • The minute hand will reach 12 in 20 minutes more. We can read the time as 40 minutes past 1.
  • We can also read the time as 20 minutes to 2.
AM and PM

Look at the clocks given below.

They both show 7'O clock. But it can be 7'Oclock in the morning or in the evening. How do we know that?

clock_hands  clock_hands
  • We know that there are 24 hours in a day. 12 hours are for the day and 12 for the night
  • 12' O clock at night is called midnight and 12 'O clock in the day is called noon.
  • The time between midnight and noon is denoted by a.m. ( anti meridiem).
  • The time between noon and midnight is denoted by p.m. (post meridiem).

So, 4'O clock in the morning is written as 4 a.m. and 2 'O clock in the afternoon is written as 2 p.m.

Minutes In a Hour And Hours In A Day
  • The minutes hand takes 1 hour or 60 minutes to go around the face of the clock once.
  • So, there are 60 minutes in 1 hour.
  • Hence, there are 2×60= 120 minutes or 2 hours.
  • Similarly, there are 3×60 minutes or 180 minutes in 3 hours.
  • But how long is a minute?
  • The hour hand takes 12 hours to go around the clock once.
  • In a day, the hour hand goes around the clock twice.
  • So, there are 12×2 (=24) hours in a day.

  • We know that 1 day = 24 hours and 1 hour = 60 minutes
  • We use these relationships for conversion of time.
Example: how many hours are there in 2 days?
1 day= 24 hours
2 day= 2×24 hours= 48 hours

Answer: There are 48 hours in 2 days.
  • You have seen many types of calendars small calendars, big calendars, 1 page calendars, 3 page, wall calendars and desk calendars
  • Generally, a calendar is for one year, from January to December
  • It is divided into 12 parts or months
  • Each month is divided into weeks. A week has 7 days. A month generally has four weeks. A year has 52 weeks.
1 Minute = 60 SecondsSeconds
1 Hour = 60 MinutesMinutes
1 Day = 24 HoursHours
1 Year = 52 WeeksWeeks
1 Year = 12 MonthsMonths
1 Year = 365 DaysYear
1 Leap Year = 366 DaysLeap Year
1 Century = 100 YearsCentury
  • Count the months on your knuckles
  • All the months on the knuckles have 31 days, and the months on the dips have 30 days
  • Only February is an exception with 28 or 29 days.

What is a leap year?

  • In 1 year, there are 365 days and in the month of February has 28 days
  • But every fourth year February has 29 days
  • If an year has 366 days, it is called a leap year.

How does this happen?

  • Actually there are 365¼ days in 1 year
  • After 4 years,¼ +¼+¼ +¼ days takes a leap and becomes a full day.
  • 'Leap' means 'Jump'. So, a leap year takes a jump from 365 to 366 days. You can divide a year by 4 to find out if it is a leap year or not.
