Subtraction

The first number in a subtraction is called minuend. The number from which another number is to be subtracted is called subtrahend.

minuend - subtrahend = difference
55 - 15 = 40

For example:

ts_subtraction0.gif

Minuend - Subtrahend = Difference

Minuend:The number that is to be subtracted from.

Subtrahend: The number that is to be subtracted.

Difference: The result of subtracting one number from another.

Definition

  • Subtraction is a mathematical operation that represents the operation of removing objects from a collection.
  • It is signified by the minus sign (−).
  • ts_subtraction.JPG

    For example:

  • In the picture on the right, there are 5 − 2 apples—meaning 5 apples with 2 taken away, which is a total of 3 apples.
  • Therefore, 5 − 2 = 3.
  • Count And Write In The Boxes

    How many bananas are left?

    subtraction3.png

    3 bananas are left.

"When some things are taken away, they are being subtracted".

    • The '-'sign shows subtraction.
    • Use the sign '-' instead of 'take away'.
    • Subtraction is written using the minus sign "−" between the terms.
    • The result is expressed with an equals sign.
    • For example:

    • 2-1=1 "two minus one equals one"
    • 4-2=2 "four minus two equals two"
    • 6-3=3 "six minus three equals three"
    • 4-6=-2 "four minus six equals negative two"

    • From 6, take away 4.
    • Say 6 minus 4 equals 2
    • Write 6 - 4 = 2
    subtraction6.png
    • From 9, take away 5.
    • Say 9 minus 5 equal 4.
    • Write 9 - 5 = 4
    subtraction7.png
    • From 5, take away 2.
    • Say 5 minus 2 equal 3 or write 5 - 2 = 3
