Data Handling

Definition
Data means any item of information however presented or represented.
Data handling may be as simple as orderly recording on a sheet of paper.

Pictographs

Pictograph is a way of presenting the data or information using symbolic figures. In a pictograph, symbols are used to denote numbers. If the numbers are larger then one symbol is used to represent many people/children/trees and so on.

Look at the following example.

Example 1: Find the number of children who chose to eat the given fruits?

Solution:
Number of children who chose pear = 7
Number of children who chose watermelon = 1
Number of children who chose orange = 1
Number of children who chose apple = 1
Number of children who chose banana = 1.

Example 2:Find the number of children who chose various mode of transport to reach school?

Solution:
Number of children who chose bus = 7
Number of children who chose car = 4
Number of children who chose cycle = 6
Number of children who chose to go on foot = 3.

Example 2:During Christmas, there were 35 persons engaged in various activities. 9 persons like decorating the Christmas tree, 11 people like opening presents, 4 people like playing in snow, 3 people like carols and music, 6 people like spending time with friends and family, and 2 people like Christmas food.
Based on the above data prepare a tally chart.
Solution:

Favourite part of Christmas Number of People
Decorating the Christmas tree IIII IIII
Opening presents IIII IIII I
playing in snow IIII
Carols and music III
Time with friends and family IIII I
Christmas food II
Bar Graphs

Definition:
This is a graph with rectangular bars having the lengths proportional to the given numerical data that they represent.
Here instead of pictures, bars are drawn.

The following graph shows the amount of burgers sold during last week from Monday to Friday.

• Number of burgers sold on Monday = 25
• Number of burgers sold on Tuesday = 30
• Number of burgers sold on Wednesday = 45
• Number of burgers sold on Thursday = 60
• Number of burgers sold on Friday = 15.
As we can see, it is easy to read a bar graph too.

A bar graph must have:
▪ A Title to tell us what it shows.
▪ Appropriate scales.
▪ Labels for both the scales.
▪ All the bars have equal width.
▪ Between two consecutive bars, there is an equal distance.
▪ All the bars are shaded or coloured.
