Definition

The addition of two whole numbers is the total amount of those quantities combined.

For example:

In the above picture, there is a combination of three apples and two apples together, making a total of five apples. This observation is equivalent to the mathematical expression.

"3 + 2 = 5" i.e., "3 add 2 is equal to 5".

4+3=7.

3+1=4.

#### The table given below provides information about the number of pupils who have dolls and cars. Find out how many pupils are have total toys.

 Gita Rita Sita Latha Neeta Total dolls 13 14 12 16 15 70 cars 14 12 16 14 12 68 Total

Gita has, 13 dolls and 14 cars .
I can break 13 into 10 + 3 and 14 into 10 + 4
Then it is easy.I add 10 + 10 and 3 + 4
So 13 + 14
= 10 + 3 + 10 + 4
= 20 + 3 + 4
= 20 + 7
= 27
See if you can do the same for Rita, Sita, Latha, Neetha .
Rita rarr 14 + 12
= 10 + 4 + 10 + 2
= 20 + 4 + 2
= 20 + 6
= 26
Sita rarr 12 + 16
= 10 + 2 + 10 + 6
= 20 + 2 + 6
= 20 + 8
= 28
Latha rarr 16 + 14
= 10 + 6 + 10 + 4
= 20 + 6 + 4
= 20 + 10
= 30
Neetha rarr 15 + 12
= 10 + 5 + 10 + 2
= 20 + 5 + 2
= 20 + 8
= 28
Total number of Toys are 138.

Examples
1. 32 + 36 = 68
2. 65 + 47 = 112
3. 86 + 75 = 161
4. 65 + 74 = 139
5. 74 + 46 = 120
6. 73 + 62 = 135
7. 26 + 64 = 90

Zero added to a number is equal to the number itself.
Examples:
6+0=6
345+0=345
2. Adding numbers that end in zeros
2+3=5,and then writing zeros thereafter.So,200+300=500.

10 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the tens place by 1.
Example: 55 +10=65; 487 +10=497, etc.
100 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the hundreds place.
Example: 565 +100= 665 ; 445+100=545;etc.
1000 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the thousands place.
Example: 6520+1000=7520; 8423+1000=9423;etc.

Any of the numbers that are added together.

For example: In 8 + 3 = 11, the 8 and the 3 are addends.

Carefully look at the table again.

#### How many students are there in ZPH school? There are 132 boys and 122 girls in Thimmapur school. What is the total number of students in the school?Let us find the total number of students in the school. Add 132 and 122.

+ H T O
1 3 2
1 2 2
2 5 4

Example:A factory produces 214 lights in the first week and 124 lights in the second week. How many fans did the factory produce in the two weeks?

How many bricks?
A kitchen is being constructed in Thimmapur school. 475 bricks are available.
The mason brings 220 more bricks and uses them to construct the kitchen.
A total of how many bricks are used to construct the kitchen?
Think! Is 475 + 220 more than 600 or less than 600?
Number of bricks in the school             4 7 5
Number of bricks the mason brings    +2 2 0
------------
Total number of bricks                       6 9 5
------------
Example: 1 John and Gopi are playing with pebbles. John has 163 pebbles. He wins 125 more pebbles. How many pebbles does John have now?
John's pebbles initially                    1 6 3
Pebbles won by John                    +1 2 5
------------
John's pebbles bricks                    2 8 8

How many chocolates do you need?
It was decided to distribute a chocolate to each person on Independence Day in play school. There were 267 students and 12 teachers. Two girls Latha and Neha calculated the number of chocolates required for distribution, as given below-
Latha has
2 6 7
+ 1 2
-----------
3 8 7
-----------
Neha has
2 6 7
+ 1 2
-----------
2 7 9
-----------

2 hundreds + 6 tens + 7 ones
1 tens + 2 Ones
------------------------------
2 hundreds + 7 tens + 9 ones
-------------------------------
From the above solution it is clearly stated that Neha added in the correct order of addends i.e. ones place value in the ones place and tens place value in the tens place.
