Subtraction

Subtraction

Subtraction means taking away. When we subtract a smaller number from a bigger number, the answer we get is called the difference.

    Example: Subtract 57 and 189.
    - H T O
    1 8 9
    5 7
    1 3 2

Subtraction Of 4-Digit Numbers (Without Regrouping)

    Example: Subtract 5142 from 9376.

Step 1: Arrange the numbers in the column as shown.

    Step 2: Subtract the ones.
    •6 ones - 2 ones =4 ones
•Write 4 in the ones column.

    - TH H T O
    6
    2
    4

    Step 3: Subtract the tens.
    •7 tens- 4 tens=3 tens.
•Write 3 in the tens column.

    - TH H T O
    7 6
    4 2
    3 4

    Step 4: Subtract the hundreds.
    •3 hundreds -1 hundreds=2 hundreds
•Write 2 hundreds in the hundreds column.

    - TH H T O
    3 7 6
    1 4 2
    2 3 4

    Step 5: Subtract the thousands.
    •9 thousands -5 thousands= 4 thousands.
•Write 4 in the thousands column.

    - TH H T O
    9 3 7 6
    5 1 4 2
    4 2 3 4

    Answer:

    - TH H T O
    9 3 7 6
    5 1 4 2
    4 2 3 4
    Answer: 4234.
Subtraction Of 4-Digit Numbers With Regrouping

    Example: Subtract 4359 and 9621.

Step 1: Put the numbers in the columns correctly.

Step 2: Subtract the ones. We need to regroup the tens and ones, as we cannot subtract 1 ones from 9 ones.
    •2 tens and 1 ones=1 ten and 11 ones.
•11 ones-9 ones=2 ones. Write 2 in the ones column.

    - TH H T O
    111
    9
    2

    Step 3: Subtract the tens.
    •6 hundreds and 1 ten= 6 hundreds and 11 tens. 11 tens-5 tens=6 tens.
•Write 6 in the tens column.

    - TH H T O
    211 111
    5 9
    6 2

Step 4 : Subtract the hundreds.
    •5 hundreds -3 hundreds = 2 hundreds.
•Write 2 in the hundreds column.

    - TH H T O
    65 211 111
    3 5 9
    2 6 2

Step 5 : Subtract the thousands.
    •9 thousands - 4 thousands = 5 thousands. Write 5 in the thousands column.

    - TH H T O
    9 65 211 111
    4 3 5 9
    5 2 6 2

    Answer :

    - TH H T O
    9 65 211 111
    4 3 5 9
    5 2 6 2
    Answer :5262

    Subtracting from Zero

    Examples 1:
    Subtract 347 and 705.

    Step 1: Subtract the ones.
•We cannot subtract 7 ones from 5 ones. We need to regroup the tens and ones. There are 0 tens.
•So , we first regroup 1 hundred into 10 tens, and then 1 ten into 10 ones. Thus, we have 6 hundreds 9 tens and 15 ones.
    •Now, subtract 7 ones from 15 ones. 15 ones -7 ones=8 ones.
•Write 8 in the ones column.

    - H T O
    76 09 515
    7
    8

    Step 2:
    •Subtract the tens.
    •9 tens -4 tens=5 tens
•Write 5 in the tens column.

    - H T O
    76 09 515
    4 7
    5 8

    Step 3:
    •Subtract the hundreds.
    •6 hundreds - 3 hundred=3 hundreds
•Write 3 in the hundreds column.

    - H T O
    76 09 515
    3 4 7
    3 5 8

    Answer:

    - H T O
    76 09 515
    3 4 7
    3 5 8
    Answer:358

Easy To Subtract

    Short cut method

We can subtract two numbers mentally.
    Example 1: Subtract 43 from 87.
Step 1: Expand the number to be subtracted, 43=40+3.
Step 2: First subtract 40 and then 3.
    87-40=47,
    47-3=44
    Answer:44.

    Example 2: Subtract 37 from 68.
Step 1: Choose the smaller, 37.
Step 2: Count all the tens to reach the bigger number, 68.
Step 3: Write the difference between each pair.
    37 → 40
    40 → 50
    50 → 60
    60 → 68

    37 → 40 = 3
    40 → 50 = 10
    50 → 60 = 10
    60 → 68 = 8
    3+10+10+8=31

Step 4: Add all the differences.
    So,68-37=31.
    Answer :31.

    Subtraction Facts

When two numbers are added, we get a sum. The difference between the sum, and any of the two number is the other number added.

    Example:   If 542 +118=660, then 660-542=118
    660-118=542.

    Checking Subtraction By Addition

Example:  Subtract 2439 from 5327, and check the answer by addition.

    - TH H T O
    54 312 211 717
    2 4 3 9
    2 8 8 8
    + TH H T O
    2 8 8 8
    2 4 3 9
    5 3 2 7

The difference between 5327 and 2439 is 2888.
If we add this difference to 2439, we get 5327.

    So the answer is correct.

Estimating The Difference

•We shall now learn to estimate the difference between the numbers and compare it with another number.

Example: Estimate the difference between 654 and 456. Will it be more than 200 or less than 200?

    We know that 600-400=200.
    Here, 654> 600 and 456>400.
But both are not equally greater.

    - H T O
    65 514 414
    4 5 6
    1 9 8
So,we can estimate that 654 -456 will be less than 200.

    Word Problems

Example: Anil bought 489 oranges and Mahesh bought 735 oranges. How many more oranges did Mahesh buy?

Step 1: What is to be found?
How many more oranges did Mahesh buy?
Step 2: What information is given?
Anil bought 489 oranges and Mahesh bought 735 oranges.
Step 3: What is to be done?
489 oranges need to be subtracted from 735 oranges.
    Step 4: Do the subtraction.

    - H T O
    76 312 515
    4 8 9
    2 4 6
Step 5: Does the answer seem correct?
Yes, it does as 246 oranges are less than 735 oranges.
