Organisation of information

  • We need to get information/data is gathered.
  • Once the information/data is gathered, the next step is to get results. Results can be obtained by arranging the data.
  • To make sense of the gathered information, it has to be organised and put into tables. Such an arrangement is called a pictograph.
  • But it is possible only when the number of each category is not very large.
  • When the number is large, drawing pictures is not easy. To solve this problem we draw bars to represent numbers.
  • Theses bars are called tally marks.
  • To represent numbers, tally marks are used in the following way.

We represent 1 by| , 2 by || , and so on.

Let us represent the choice of pizza toppings with the help of tally marks.

After organising the data in the form of tally marks, we can answer some questions very quickly. Like, in the above example, we can tell the following by observation:

  1. Cheese topping is the most favourite.
  2. Olives topping is the least favourite.
  3. Four friends of Gigi liked to have tomato topping.
  4. Onion and capsicum toppings are liked equally by 3 friends.

Pictographs

A representation of certain information by making use of picture symbols is called a pictograph or a pictogram. A pictograph will always have a title and an explanation about the picture. A pictograph looks very interesting, and is eye-catching.

Example:

Varun asked all his friends what kind of movies they liked to watch. His friends gave him the following answers.

Type of movie Action Cartoon Comedy Musical
Number of friends 7 4 2 1

Varun represented the gathered information in the form of a pictograph as shown below.
