Addition
  • Addition means putting together two or more numbers. The total of two or more numbers is called their sum.
Addition of 4-digit numbers

    Example1:
    Add 4317 and 2432.

    Solution:-

Step 1: Put the numbers in the columns correctly.

    Step 2: Add the ones.
    7 ones + 2 ones= 9 Ones

    + TH H T O
    7
    2
    9

    Step 3: Add the tens.
    1 ten +3 tens =4 Tens

    + TH H T O
    1 7
    3 2
    4 9

    Step 4: Add the hundreds.
    3 hundreds + 4 hundreds = 7 hundreds

    + TH H T O
    3 1 7
    4 3 2
    7 4 9

    Step 5: Add the thousands.
    4 thousands + 2 thousands = 6 thousands

    + TH H T O
    4 3 1 7
    2 4 3 2
    6 7 4 9

    Answer:
    + TH H T O
    4 3 1 7
    2 4 3 2
    6 7 4 9
    Answer=6749

    Regrouping

    Regrouping

    • When we add two numbers, such as 8 ones and 6 ones, we need to regroup the numbers to make addition easier. We can take 1 one from the 5 ones, and add it to 9 ones to make a ten.
    • So, 8 ones + 6 ones = 8 ones + 2 one + 4 ones= 10 ones + 4 ones =1 ten and 4 ones. Similarly, we can regroup tens, hundreds, and thousands.
Addition Of 4-Digit Numbers With Regrouping

    Example:
    Add 4378 and 2432.

Step 1: Put the numbers in the columns correctly.

    Step 2: Add the ones.
8 ones + 2 ones= 10 ones= 1 ten. Write 0 in the ones column and take 1 ten to the tens column.

    + TH H T O
    1 8
    2
    0

    Step 3: Add the tens.
    7 tens +3 tens+1 ten (carried over)
    =11tens = 1 hundred and 1tens
Write 1 in the tens column and take 1 hundred to the hundreds column.

    + TH H T O
    1 71 8
    3 2
    1 0

    Step 4: Add the hundreds.
    3 hundreds +4 hundreds + 1 hundred ( carried over) = 8 hundreds.
Write 8 in the hundred column.

    + TH H T O
    31 71 8
    4 3 2
    8 1 0

    Step 5: Add the thousands.
    4thousands + 2 thousands = 6 thousands. Write 6 in the thousands column.

    + TH H T O
    4 31 71 8
    2 4 3 2
    6 8 1 0

    Answer:
    + TH H T O
    4 31 71 8
    2 4 3 2
    6 8 1 0

    Answer : 6810.

Addition Of Three 4-Digit Numbers

    Example 2: Add 1319, 2654 and 4750.

Step 1: Put the numbers in the columns correctly.

    Step 2: Add the ones.
    9 ones + 4 ones+ 0 ones=13 ones =1 ten and 3 ones .
write 3 in the ones column, and take 1 ten to the tens column.

    + TH H T O
    1 9
    4
    0
    3

    Step 3:Add the tens
    1 tens+5tens+5 tens+1 tens(carried over)=12 tens=2 tens and 1 hundreds
write 2 in the tens column, and take 1 hundred to hundreds column.

    + TH H T O
    1 11 9
    5 4
    5 0
    2 3

    Step 4: Add the hundreds.
    3 hundreds + 6 hundreds +7hundreds+ 1 hundred ( carried over)=17 hundreds=1 thousand and 7 hundreds.
Write 0 in the hundreds column and take 1 thousand to the thousands column.

    + TH H T O
    1 31 11 9
    6 5 4
    7 5 0
    7 2 3

    Step 5: Add the thousands.
    1 thousand + 2 thousands +4 thousands+ 1 thousand (carried over)=7 thousands write 7 in the thousands column.

    + TH H T O
    11 31 11 9
    2 6 5 4
    4 7 5 0
    8 7 2 3

    Answer:
    + TH H T O
    11 31 11 9
    2 6 5 4
    4 7 5 0
    8 7 2 3
    Answer:8723.
Order Of Addends

Let us add 2424 to 1543, and 1543 to 2424.

    Add 2424 to 1543                           Add 1543 to 2424

    + TH H T O
    2 4 2 4
    1 5 4 3
    3 9 6 7
    + TH H T O
    1 5 4 3
    2 4 2 4
    3 9 6 7

We see that in both cases, we get the same answer. So, the order of the addends does not change the sum.

    Easy to ADD

    1. Adding zero
Zero added to a number is equal to the number itself.
      Examples:
      9+0=9
      625+0=625
    2. Adding numbers that end in zeros
      Example: Add 100 and 500.
      1+5=6,and then writing zeros thereafter.So,100+500=600.

    3. Adding 10
10 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the tens place by 1.
      Example: 77 +10=87; 457 +10=467, etc.
    4. Adding 100
100 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the hundreds place.
      Example: 875 +100= 975;441+100=541;etc.
    5. Adding 1000
1000 added to a number increases the value of the digit in the thousands place.
      Example: 6319+1000=7319;7412+1000=8412;etc.
Estimating the Sum

    Estimating the Sum

Estimation is a rough idea which you make without doing the actual calculations.
Suppose you are asked to estimate or guess the answer of 152 +434. Will it be less than 500 or more than 500?

    You know that 100+400=500.

As 152>100 and 434>400, the sum of 152+434 will be more than the sum of 100+400. So, you can estimate that it will be more than 500.

    + H T O
    1 5 2
    4 3 4
    5 8 6

Now,when we add, we get 586 as the answer, which is more than 500.

Missing Addends

  • Observe the following: 300 +____=500
Since one addend and the sum, both ends in two zeros, the missing addend will also end in two zeros.
    You know that 3+2=5. So, 300 +200=500.

  • Similarly, the missing addend in 5000+_____=7000 will be 2000 as 5000+2000=7000. (5+2=7)

    Learning To Add Horizontally

    Step 1: Add the ones. 3 ones + 4 ones= 7 ones.
Step 2: Add the tens. 2 tens +4 tens =6 tens.
    Step 3: Add the hundreds.
    2 hundreds +5 hundreds= 7 hundreds.

    H T 0
    2 2 3
    +
    H T 0
    5 4 4
    =
    H T 0
    7 6 7

    Word Problems

When we solve word problems, we work with English and Mathematics together.
Problems can be solved by using these steps.

Step 1: Read the problem carefully to understand, what is to be found.
Step 2: Note down the information given in the problems.
Step 3: Think and decide what needs to be done.
    Step 4: Do the sum.
Step 5:Think about the answer. Does it seem to be the right one?
