Subtraction

### Definition

Taking one number away from the other is called subtraction.
Let us consider few examples to understand the concept of subtraction.

Example: Seema bought some chocolates from the store. She ate few of them. How many chocolates are left with her?
Solution: Let us subtract considering different numbers to find the answer in each case.

1. 30 chocolates - 12 chocolates 2. 78 chocolates - 24 chocolates 3. 46 chocolates - 13 chocolates 4. 95 chocolates - 52 chocolates Write Numbers In Columns And Subtract

To subtract the smaller number from the bigger number we follow the following steps:

• First take the bigger number
• Write it above the smaller number
• Then subtract the smaller number from the bigger number.

Examples:
1. 63 and 21
Solution:
Here, the bigger number = 63
So, we subtract 21 from 63 2. 78 and 34 3. 95 and 25 Checking Subtraction Using Addition

Example: Subtract 36 from 82 and check the answer?

Solution: We need to regroup 82 as we cannot subtract 6 from 2.

On taking 1 ten from the tens column, we get 7 in the tens column and 12 in the ones column.
12 ones-6 ones = 6 ones.
7 tens-3 tens = 4 tens. We check whether the answer is correct or not using the following method.

• The method is very simple
• We will add the difference of the two numbers to the number we subtracted.
• So, here we add 46 to 36.
• The answer we get = 82.
• This shows that our subtraction is correct. • If 48 - 27 = 21, then 27 + 21 = 48.
• If 63 - 24 = 39, then 24 + 39 = 63.
• If 57 - 48 = 9, then 48 + 9 = 57.

Comparing With The Help Of Subtraction

With the help of subtraction two numbers can be compared and can be seen which number is greater than the other.

Example: Raj has 43 pens and Neha has 12 pens. Who has more number of pens and how many more pens? Answer: So, we can say that Raj has 31 more pens than Neha.

Addition On The Number Grid

If we want to add two numbers on the grid, we start from one number and move forward as many spaces as the other number. Suppose, if we want to add 11 and 4. We start from 11 and move forward to the right 4 spaces to reach 15.
So, 11 + 4 = 15.

Shortcut to add 10, 20,30..

• If we want to add 10 to a number, we just move one space downward.
• Example: For 41 + 10 = 51, we move one space downward from 41 to reach 51.

• Similarly, if we want to add 20 we move 2 spaces downward.
• For adding 30, we move 3 spaces downward, and so on.

53 + 20 = 73 by moving 2 spaces downward
7 + 30 = 37 by moving 3 spaces downward
60 + 40 = 100 by moving 4 spaces downward.
If we want to add 34 and 22, we start from 34 and move down to 2 spaces (+20) and forward to the right 2 spaces to reach 56.
So, 34 + 22 = 56.

Subtraction On The Number Grid

If we want to subtract the numbers on the number grid,we start from the first number and move backwards as many spaces as the second number. Suppose if want to subtract 4 from 17, we start from 17 and move backward to the left 4 spaces to reach 13.

So, 17 - 4 = 13.

Shortcut to subtract 10, 20, 30...

• If want to subtract 10 from a number, we just move upward by 1 space.
• Example: For 85 - 10 = 75, we moved one space up from 85 to reach 75.

• Similarly, for 41 - 20 = 21, we moved 2 spaces upward and 1 space backward, to subtract 20 from 41 to reach 21.
• For 73 - 30 = 43, we moved 3 spaces upward from 73 to reach 43.
• For 58 - 40 = 18, we moved 4 spaces upward to reach 18.

## Word Problems

Let us consider an example to understand the word problems.
Varun bought 36 balloons from a bunch of 87 balloons from the balloon seller.
How many balloons are left with the balloon seller? ## Regrouping Of Numbers

Sometimes, when subtraction is done we may not have enough ones. In such a case, we have to regroup 1 ten to 10 ones and add then to the ones column.

Example:

75 = 70 + 5 = 7 tens + 5 ones
Let us write 1 ten as 10 ones.
7 tens + 5 ones = 6 tens + 15 ones.

Subtraction With Regrouping
Example: Subtract 48 from 62.
Solution:
• We subtract the ones first. But we cannot subtract 8 from 2. Let us regroup 62. Now,
62 = 6 tens + 2 ones = 5 tens + 12 ones.
Cross out 6 in the tens column and write 5.
Then 12 ones - 8 ones = 4 ones
• Then subtract the tens. 5 tens - 4 tens = 1 ten.
