### Definition:

• The combination of two or more numbers to find the total is called addition.

Let us consider examples of addition using fruits and vegetables

1) 22 Watermelons + 13 Watermelons. 2) 56 Custard apples + 32 Custard apples.  3) 12 Tomatoes + 61 Tomatoes  4) 72 Potatoes + 18 Potatoes. Addition Of Three Numbers:

When we add three numbers, we first add any two numbers.
Then to the sum of the two numbers, we add the third number.

Example:
41 + 32 + 18
Solution:
The sum of 41 and 32 is, Now, to the sum of 73, we add 18 So, the final answer is 91.

While doing addition, we put things together.
Plus " + " is the sign of addition. The numbers we add are called " addends " and the answer we get is called the " sum ". When we add any 2-digits, we first add the ones and then the tens.

Look at the following addition problems.
1) Add 36 + 48 and 48 + 36. We notice that the sum is the same in both the cases.

2) Add 72 + 14 and 14 + 72. So, we can say that, even if we change the order of the addends, the sum remains the same.

## Regrouping Of Numbers

Regrouping is nothing but rearranging the numbers to make addition or subtraction easier to solve.
Example: 11 Balls or 11 ones is the same as 1 Ten + 1 one.
Similarly,
13 ones = 1 ten + 3 ones
15 ones = 1 ten + 5 ones.
In the same way, we can write,
• 3 tens + 14ones = 3 tens + 1 ten + 4 ones
• = 4 tens + 4 ones.
• 6 tens + 39 ones = 6 tens + 3 tens + 9 ones
• = 9 tens + 9 ones.

Let us consider few examples to understand addition with regrouping.
Example 1: Add 38 and 42.
Solution:
38 = 30 + 8 = 3 tens + 8 ones
42 = 40 + 2 = 4 tens + 2 ones
Let us write the numbers in columns to add Now, we will consider the short way to solve the problem.
Example 2:
Add 48 and 24

Solution:
• Add the ones first
8 ones + 4 ones = 12 ones = 1 ten + 2 ones
Write 2 in the ones column and take 1 to the tens column
• Add the tens
4 tens + 2 tens + 1 ten (carried over) = 7 tens
Write 7 tens in the tens column
• Sum Of Three Addends With Regrouping

Let us consider an example.

• 32 + 48 + 19
• Solution: Shortcut Method In both the cases, Answer = 99.

Steps to follow for addition with shortcut method:

• Add the ones first.
2 + 8 + 9 = 19.
19 = 10 + 9 = 1 ten + 9 ones.
• Write 9 ones in the ones column and carry 1 ten to the tens column.
• Then add the tens
3 tens + 4 tens + 1 ten + 1 ten (carried over) = 9 tens.
